The Jobs Experience

I had this dream
          where I was auditioning for
The Jobs
Experience

I had this dream
where I was in the middle
of being a Man
          Hit by a Bus.

I had to wear these Coke-bottle glasses
and walk
like I was on a raft in the trees.
The lights popped
             like ladyfingers,

so I decided just to say that: “There’s a festival
      or something weird
      happening offstage.”

But there wasn’t a script. I had to improvise.

Someone kept telling me
to smile, to round my vowels like a Wisconsin housewife,
so it was like the dream needed
        sensitivity training.

I was auditioning
for The Jobs Experience.

It was like time was moving on
           without me. I nailed it
     on the second take.
